Before refocusing his career as a director and writer Phil trained as an actor on the three year Performing Arts degree course at Rose Bruford, following many happy years in Bristol’'s Youth Theatres. He still enjoys occasionally appearing as an actor and strongly believes all directors should experience performing from time to help them best understand the actor’'s process.
His acting career encompassed regional theatre in Chester, Westcliff and Watford and favourite roles in London include Porfiri in Crime and Punishment, Creon in Oedipus, Max in The Sound of Music, The British Ambassador in The King and I, Fix in Around the World in Eighty Days, Captain Smollett in Treasure Island, Dr Seward in Dracula and Caesar in Androcles and the Lion. Aegistus in Agamemnon and The Orestia, Creon in Oedipus and Antigone, The Teacher in Brecht's The Mother, Commandatore in Don Juan and Wotan in The Ring Cycle Plays
