For over a decade the core artists of Gods and Monsters have created work inspired by the diverse cultures of those around them, sharing their perspective on the great stories of the world to a regular audience of over 30,000 every summer.
Russian big business plays an increasingly important role in London's economy while our work, social and cultural life is enriched by a strong Eastern European presence in our capital.
In 2016 Gods and Monsters plan a season dedicated to two cornerstones Easter European culture: The 19th century masterpiece CRIME AND PUNISHMENT and THE WAWEL DRAGON a beautiful folk tale from Poland
THE WAWEL DRAGON
A New Family Musical
Adapted and Directed
by Nastazja Domaradzka
and Phil Willmott
from Polish Folk Tales
Music by Theo Holloway based on Polish Folk Tunes
Gods and Monsters will make a last minute change to their repertoire this summer, offering 20,000 free seats to a production celebrating Poland's mythology.
We are very proud of our proven track of playing to London's youngest and most culturally diverse audience by sharing the great works of our capital's various communities to 40,000 people a year.
This summer we are delighted to now be presenting a big family show celebrating one of Poland's most enduring legends.
Over the next few months we will collaborate with Polish theatre maker Nastazja Domaradzka to bring to life Krakow's Dragon of Wawel, one of her country's most enduring, much loved and iconic myths.
THE WAWEL DRAGON, adapted and directed by Nastazja Domaradzka and Phil Willmott, will tell the story of the ingenious, witty and daring folk who tried to defeat the dragon beneath Wawel castle; still, to this day, one of Poland's most popular visitor attractions.
CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
A New Rock Musical
Dostoyevsky and the songs of Toyah Wilcox and Simon Darlow
Adapted and directed by Phil Willmott
Published in 1866 Dostoyeksky’s Crime and Punishment is one of the most famous and influential novels in world literature and challenge us to ask if murder is ever justified, when an idealistic student kills a ruthless money lender who terrorises the poor of St. Petersburg.
Rock music is the perfect medium with which to express the energy, rebellion, and passion of its youthful characters, particularly the restless fury and alienation of the books ant-hero, Raskolnikov.
Accordingly this new musical adaptation will feature specially written songs and favourite tracks by British rock legend, Toyah Wilcox and her song writing partner Simon Darlow.
In the teeming, stinking slums of 19th Century St. Petersburg the poverty-stricken Raskolnikov, a talented criminology student, devises a theory about extraordinary men being above the law. He then sets out to prove his theory by murdering a vile, cynical old pawnbroker and her sister, an evil he believes is justified for the greater good. The act brings Raskolnikov into contact with his with a series of vibrant characters, including the pious prostitute, Sonia and her family, and Porfiry, the unconventional detective who is charged with investigating the murder — all of whom compel Raskolnikov to examine and re-examine the repercussions of his crime driving him to a dramatic confession.
Toyah was the Punk princess of the 1980s, famous for hits like It’s A Mystery and I want to be free and has since enjoyed a song-writing career spanning thirty years, 8 Top 40 singles and over 20 albums that have kept her at the cutting edge of counter-culture across the decades; all this alongside a thriving acting and media career. The prestigious career of her song writing partner, Simon Darlow, has included creating and co-creating hits for artists such as Grace Jones, Musical Youth, Buggles and Wham and the contemporary sound of Toyah’s latest album, In the Court of the Crimson Queen.
